Africa Action, Foreign Policy In Focus, Howard University African Studies Department & the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign present:
Presentation and Discussion Featuring
Ashraf Cassiem, Chairperson of the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign, based in Cape Town, South Africa. The Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign was formed on November 2000 with the aim of fighting evictions, water cut-offs and poor health services, obtaining free electricity, securing decent housing, and opposing police brutality. As a social movement, the AEC serves as an umbrella body for over 15 community organizations, crisis committees, and concerned residents movements who have come together to organize and demand their rights to basic services.
Meetali Jain, Practitioner-in-Residence, American University, Washington College of Law
Mvuselelo Ngcoya, professor of International Relations at the School of International Service, American University. His research interests include indigenous knowledge systems, particularly the ubuntu philosophy and its relevance vis-à-vis globalization. He has worked with numerous non-governmental organizations in the US and in South Africa. Dr. Ngcoya’s other research interests include U.S. policy toward Africa and the U.S. labor movement, having worked as a research analyst for the Service Employees International Union and program associate at Africa Action.
Join Africa Action at Howard University's Blackburn Center for a discussion with Ashraf Cassiem. Come and hear panelists speak about some of the realities of post-apartheid South Africa, the campaign's organizing efforts in poor communities, obstacles facing social movement-building in Africa, and the anti-foreclosure activism emerging in some of the US cities he will be visiting, including Washington, DC.
