Privacy Policy

This privacy statement discloses the privacy practices for Africa Action.

Because this website wants to demonstrate its commitment to your privacy, it has agreed to disclose its information practices. This website has agreed to notify you of:

  1. What personally identifiable information of yours or third party personally identifiable information is collected from you through the website
  2. The organization collecting the information
  3. How the information is used
  4. With whom the information may be shared
  5. What choices are available to you regarding collection, use and distribution of the information
  6. The kind of security procedures that are in place to protect the loss, misuse, or alteration of information under Africa Action control
  7. How you can correct any inaccuracies in the information

Information Collection and Use

Africa Action is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. We will not sell, share, or rent this information to others in ways different from what is disclosed in this statement. Africa Action collects information from our users at several different points on our website.

Feedback Form

In order to give feedback on this website, a user may complete the optional feedback form. This form asks for the user’s name and email address, but this is not required. It is optional for the user to provide any other personal information on the feedback form. Any feedback provided will be sent to Africa Action, and will not be shared with any third party.

Campaign Sign-up Form

In the “Action Center” section of our site, users may sign up to join one or more of our campaigns. This indicates that they wish to receive more information about our campaign(s) and get involved with our activities. This sign-up form requires personal information, such as name, email address and other contact details. Africa Action mails packets and appeals on a quarterly basis. E-mail alerts with timely ways to take action on priority campaigns are sent bi-weekly, though in hot campaign times e-mails may be sent as often as once a week. Africa Action contacts the Networks monthly. Users can be removed from our mailing list at any time by writing to outreach[at]africaaction.org, or can remove themselves from e-mail alerts by clicking on “unsubscribe” at the bottom of any alert.

"Take Action Now"/E-Activist Center

Africa Action’s E-Activist Center and related list are administered on a website that Africa Action runs on CapWiz, an electronic communication service of Capitol Advantage Inc. The contract between Africa Action and Capitol Advantage allows CapWiz to collect and store the personal information that users provide on our behalf, but Capitol Advantage is prohibited from sharing this information with any organization except Africa Action. The contract forbids Capitol Advantage from renting, selling or trading any of this information.

The 'write your elected representatives' feature counts users’ letters and their recipients, but does not record their content. Counting permits Africa Action to track how many letters are delivered to which office-holders. Capitol Advantage discloses the user’s name, address, and e-mail address to the recipient of the message sent through this service. This information is required because most government officials and media contacts will not accept messages they receive from unidentified correspondents.

If a user wishes to have their address stored as a "cookie" for future use on their computer, they may select the "remember me" option when sending letters. If users do not select "remember me," their information will not be stored on their computer or on Africa Action’s server. If users choose to be remembered, the cookie will be stored on their computer solely for the purpose of retrieving their personal address when they send letters. It will not be stored on Capitol Advantage or Africa Action servers.

By signing up for the action e-list, users will receive periodic emails or action alerts informing them of critical moments when their involvement can make a real difference. Both users’ email and mailing addresses will be used exclusively for the purpose of sending them email from Africa Action. Users will not be contacted in any other way, nor will their information be offered to a third-party. Users may cancel or opt out of their subscription at any time by sending an email to the address listed in this section of the site.

If users use the Tell-a-Friend feature on Cap Wiz to e-mail a link to a friend, they will need to provide their own email address as well as that of their friend. Capitol Advantage will automatically send the message to this person, as well as invite them to visit the site. This information is used for the sole purpose of sending this e-mail.

“Order Materials”

We request an email from the user wishing to order materials from Africa Action. Here we request that the user provide contact information (like name, shipping address, telephone number and email). This information is used to fill the customer’s order and to contact them to arrange for payment. We may use contact information collected through the order form to send communications about our campaign activities, and to send notices about new materials available for order through the website.

Contribution Form

We accept credit card contributions through a secure contribution form on our website. Our security policy is outlined in the next section below. The information gathered through the contribution form is used to process the contribution. If we have trouble processing a contribution, we may use this contact information to get in touch with the user. Contact information collected through the contribution form is added to our donor database. We may use this information to send out acknowledgements, and future appeal letters.

Security

This website takes every precaution to protect our users’ information. When users submit sensitive information via the website, this information is protected both online and off-line.

When our order form or contribution form ask users to enter sensitive information (such as credit card number), that information is encrypted and protected by the web browser using the standard https protocol. While on a secure page, such as the order form or the contribution form, the lock icon on their web browser becomes locked, as opposed to un-locked (or open) when a user is just “surfing.”

While we use https security/encryption to protect sensitive information online, we also do everything in our power to protect user-information off-line. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, our administrator or technical consultant) are granted access to personally identifiable information.

If you have any questions about the security at our website, you can send an email to info[at]africaaction.org.

Links

This website contains links to other sites. Please be aware that Africa Action is not responsible for the privacy practices of other such sites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of each and every website that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by this website.

Log Files

We use IP addresses to analyze trends, administer the site, track users’ movement on the site, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.

Sharing

We may share aggregated demographic information with funders and other organizations. This is not linked to any personal information that can identify any individual person. Personal information is only shared with other organizations for the purposes requested by the user, for example, information submitted for online contributions is shared with the bank and credit card company only for completing the transaction.

Cookies

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s hard drive containing information about the user. For the E-Activist Center, if you click the Remember Me option, we will place a cookie in your browser to remember your personal information. This cookie is a file that contains your name, address, and e-mail address information as you entered it on the message form. The next time you send a message, Capitol Advantage will retrieve that information from the cookie and automatically enter it on the message form for you.

A couple things to remember about cookies: Cookies are stored on your hard drive-not on our site. Most browsers are set up to accept cookies, but you can configure your browser to refuse cookies or to notify you when you've received one. If you reject cookies, though, you will not be able to use the Remember Me feature.

Cookies are not used on this site to track users while on the site, to collect information about their browsing patterns, nor to change content based on any personal information. If a user rejects the cookie, they may still use our site.

Editing and Deleting Personal Contact Information

If a user’s personally identifiable information changes, or if a user no longer desires to receive information from us, we will endeavor to provide a way to correct, update or remove that user’s personal data provided to us. This can usually be done by contacting our administrator or using the unsubscribe form on this web site.

Notification of changes

If we decide to change our privacy policy, we will post these changes on this page so our users are always aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we disclose it. If at any point we decide to use personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, we will notify users by way of an email. Users will have a choice as to whether or not we use their information in any different manner. We will use this information in accordance with the privacy policy under which the information was collected.
